Why we care about cultural diversity in Australia

Me and grandma Jamaica

In 2013, we told you our story up until then (which you can read here). Now almost two years later, we’d say it’s time to look back and see how far we’ve come since then.

The story of The Ja Joint starts in Saint Ann, Jamaica, where our founder, Carly Day’s, family settled and bought land in the 1930’s. The Ja Joint as inspired by Carly’s heritage, and is what led her to introduce authentic Jamaican food to Australians.

Her great grandparents worked hard as commercial growers and farmers, growing traditional Jamaican fruits and vegetables. They were passionate about two things: supplying quality Jamaican produce, and providing fair employment opportunities for local Jamaicans.

The Ja Joint’s vision is to continue these family morals, by providing great quality products and empowering disadvantaged refugees through employment and business. We offer a platform that is nurturing and enables refugees to develop their skills and confidence that they can utilise to create their own amazing future, as well as a space to tell their story where their voice is heard.

The Ja Joint really didn’t just begin in 2013, we have been spreading our message of fairness and empowerment since Carly’s family bought that land generations ago.

Since launching, we have received the endorsement of Marco Breakenridge –Hon Consulate for Jamaica in Australia that we have the best products down under. In addition, our accolades include:

  • Top 5 Sellers on Good Spender website Christmas campaign
  • 5 Star rating from our customers
  • The Yard Party
  • Taste of Harmony Festival Ambassador

With every step of the way, we come closer to achieving our vision for The Ja Joint, and for Australia. Connecting cultures and helping those that are disadvantaged has always been as important to us as providing everyone with great Jamaican food.

We’ve done a lot in two years, but we’re only just getting started.
